Rory McIlroy's second round at THE PLAYERS Championship involved more than just golf. Hostile fans targeted the star with taunts just as he was starting to find his groove, forcing tournament officials to step in.
As the defending champion tried to send the ball across the hazard in front of the fourth green at TPC Sawgrass, a group of fans shouted, “Get in the water.” The world number two was still battling his back issue. Despite missing out on the practice round, McIlroy managed to send the ball across the water.
And when he did, the men cheered for him. We still don’t know if the five-time major champion heard the unruly fans, but the officials at THE PLAYERS Championship did. They asked the fans to vacate the premises.
This was the first time such hecklers shouted at McIlroy after the incident at Bethpage Black during the 2025 Ryder Cup. Back then, the crowd even targeted his wife, Erica, and threw a drink at her.
McIlroy believed that the experience at the Ryder Cup was “just a one-off.” Yet, the incident at THE PLAYERS Championship was a reminder that some unruly fans are certainly a part of the game.
Rory McIlroy Is Proud of His Performance at THE PLAYERS Championship
McIlroy didn’t seem bothered even if he heard them. He quickly recovered and reached the par-5 9th and two-putted the hole to make the cut. However, he did have to go one over par in the round.
“There was pride in making this cut. I have 280-odd starts on the PGA Tour, and I’ve missed maybe less than 30 cuts,” the 36-year-old said. “So, I’m proud of that. But if I’d have missed this one, I probably would have had to add an event going into the Masters.”
And when his former caddie, Jim Mackay, asked him about his plans for the next few weeks by the last hole, Rory McIlroy announced that “there’s a lot riding on it.”
He reportedly wants a three-week break to prepare for the Masters Tournament. McIlroy intends to join the ranks of Tiger Woods, Sir Nick Faldo, and Jack Nicklaus and win the back-to-back Masters Tournament.
Before that, the Irishman needs to compete against the best of the PGA Tour in the weekend rounds. So what do you think? Can McIlroy manage to claim a top 10 finish at THE PLAYERS Championship?
