It is not often that a historic links landscape transforms into a winter course. On Tuesday, June 9, a new picture from the Home of Golf left fans astonished.
After an image went viral online, social media users were baffled by the sight of the legendary St. Andrews Links completely covered. The photo shows the course fully concealed by hail due to an unexpected storm. The popular account NUCLR GOLF shared the incredible visual on X.
"#LOOK — St Andrews historic Old Course has been hit by a HUGE snowstorm, blanketing the famed links in white stuff. Would you still tee it up?"
The St. Andrews Links are in Fife, Scotland, and feature seven public courses, including the legendary Old Course—the oldest golf course in the world.
In the wake of a storm that swept through the area recently, one user commented that the incident happened on June 4.
A heavy snowstorm has completely obscured the legendary course in hail and snow, making it difficult to distinguish its legendary greenery. Being a course used only in the summertime, the extreme weather created a surreal effect.
January 2026 saw a similar storm, which coated the iconic course in a blanket of white. Another such instance was February 2018, when the infamous 'Beast from the East' storm hit The Old Course. The Links were closed due to the snow.
Although the location sees occasional frosts, a full snow covering brings unique difficulties that usually prevent immediate use of the grounds.
Unprecedented Weather Clouds St. Andrews Upgrades
The unexpected development at the Home of Golf came right after what proved to be a week of spectacular performances on the golf course itself, showing a stark visual difference for local spectators.
Just last week, this iconic course held the St. Andrews Links Trophy, where the conditions allowed for a display of incredible scores by amateurs before the arrival of white weather.
The French prodigy Lev Grinberg won the tournament with scores of 67 and 70 on the last day, giving him a final total score of 269.
Grinberg's 18-under-par achievement made him victorious by a seven-shot margin from Melvin Muller.
However, this latest snowstorm highlights the ever-present environmental challenges for those tasked with preparing the historic course for the highly anticipated 2027 Open Championship.
The extensive design changes include expansion of championship tees (up to 7,445 yards, +132 yards), strategic bunker additions, and restoration work on the Principal's Nose bunker (par-4 16th).
Looking ahead, local ground crews must closely monitor the delicate turf as this unexpected snow melts, ensuring the venue remains on track for its scheduled premium upgrades.
