Rory McIlroy's physical condition became a major talking point at Quail Hollow as he was seen fighting through a visible ailment during the final round. While the Northern Irishman improved his ball-striking, his labored movement between shots suggested a deeper struggle during the $20 million signature event.
The veteran golfer addressed the mounting concerns regarding his health immediately after finishing his round on Sunday. Spectators had noticed McIlroy favoring his right foot throughout the day, sparking questions about whether the injury had derailed his performance after a difficult 4-over-par 75 during Saturday's third round.
Speaking to the media after finishing his game on Sunday, McIlroy stated that he was suffering from a painful blister under the pinky toenail of his right foot. Commenting about his current status after the completion of his rounds, McIlroy mentioned, "It's a little sore, but I'll be all right."

The issue first surfaced on Friday afternoon, potentially complicating his preparation for the final stretch of the tournament. Despite the timing, McIlroy was quick to dismiss the idea that the blister was a valid excuse for his scoring struggles during the week.
In addition to the physical hurdle, McIlroy spent his Saturday evening on the range trying to iron out a persistent "left miss" caused by tricky wind conditions. He felt he had successfully managed the habit by Sunday, shooting a final-round 67 to finish at a 5-under-par total.
Fixing the swing and healing up for the PGA
Although McIlroy ended up at T19 with a cumulative score of 5-under 279, the player appears quite optimistic regarding his fitness status after the tournament. He addressed the state of his toe injury by stating, "No, it's fine. I'll be okay," as he prepares to carry this improved momentum into Philadelphia.
The Northern Irishman's focus now shifts toward the greens at Aronimink, which he recently scouted during a day trip. He believes the venue will play differently than it did in the 2018 BMW Championship, noting, "It’s not a long course, but the big defense is the greens."
By taking an early look at the venue, McIlroy has reduced the pressure to play extensive practice rounds during the tournament week. He intends to play only nine holes on Tuesday and Wednesday to keep his foot rested.
Now, the world-class golfer is heading home to get some proper rest and find a better wind direction to straighten out his game. He is confident that a few days at his home course will have him back to 100% for the next big challenge.
