Rory McIlroy Opens Up About His Relationship With Former World No. 1 Golfer

Dec 29, 2025, 10:00 AM CUT

The history between Rory McIlroy and the former world #1, Ernie Els, goes a long way back. But the highlight came when Els reacted to McIlroy’s decision not to compete in the Champions Tour after turning 50 years old.

Taking to X, Els wrote, "Interesting to read [Rory McIlroy] comments today. At 35 years old I was also bullet proof saying things about not playing past 50. I’m 55 now and laughing at my comments from back then. [Champions Tour] golf is so fulfilling with a great bunch of players we all grew up together from junior golf. Our sponsors and partners are wonderful companies and people. Competition is a powerful tool!"

The five-time major winner was reminded of Els’ comments during his appearance on the Shotgun Start Podcast about a week ago. “I forgot about Ernie coming out and popping me,” McIlroy said. “I have a great relationship with Ernie.” And why not? Els shared McIlroy's belief back when he was young.

But is he ready to compete at the Champions Tournament? Not really! Rory McIlroy told the guys from Fried Egg Golf, “I’m very fortunate that I’m in three of the four major championships until whoever the pars that be tell me to not play anymore.”

Under current eligibility rules, McIlroy can continue competing in the PGA Championship and The Open Championship until age 60, reinforcing why senior-tour considerations remain distant for now. But let’s keep our focus on the relationship between Els and McIlroy.

What Makes Rory McIlroy and Ernie Els’ Relationship So Special?

McIlroy has consistently spoken about Els as one of his early inspirations on tour. He previously revealed that he named his first dog after Els, a small but telling gesture that underscores the personal influence the South African had on him during his formative years as a professional.

"Ernie was the first big, big name I had played with as a pro. I was nervous but I remember teeing off the tenth tee and I hit three wood past his driver and I thought ‘this is alright!’.”

The same company managed the two, and that ensured they got a few drinks together.

McIlroy continued, "That was the beginning of the relationship and it’s kind of continued from there. I have always been a huge fan of his game but I am a bigger fan of the man and to have been able to get to know him and Liezl and the kids over the past few years in Florida has been great.”

Psst!! Rory McIlroy even named his dog after Els. All this reflects one thing. In McIlroy’s own words, “It’s been a good relationship."
