As the earnings for 2026 are coming together for Rory McIlroy, they have garnered attention from all around the golf world, but the unpredictability of the season keeps rushing in and leaves his anticipated defense of the Masters title uncertain.
The current Masters champion has had a volatile start to his 2026 season financially due to the highs and lows of his performances throughout the PGA and DP World Tours.
"Defending the Masters Tournament is a pretty rare feat," Rory McIlroy said during his pre-tournament conference at Augusta. "And it is something that I would love to do."
These comments were made in light of a dramatic end to the Genesis Invitational. A tense last-hole putt at Riviera earned him a whopping $1.8 million.

The Northern Irishman was tied for forty-sixth at The Players Championship, resulting in a modest payout of $72,125. His struggles continued over the weekend as he displayed an underwhelming performance.
Rory McIlroy's financial returns from this season's international outings have been inconsistent. A victory at the Dubai Invitational was within his grasp, but he ended up in some late water hazards.
Early in the round, he had an impressive run of five consecutive birdies, but mistakes ended up being more costly. His share of the $2.75 million purse was smaller than expected because he finished in a tie for third place. He earned approximately $130,000 from this.
The Historical Weight of Back-to-Back Green Jackets… Can Rory McIlroy Do It?
The ability to win consecutive Masters titles is perhaps the most exclusive accomplishment within the sport. Only three legendary golfers have been able to achieve this in the long, storied history of the tournament.
The only players to have defended their titles at the prestigious Augusta National Golf Club are golfing greats Jack Nicklaus, Nick Faldo, and Tiger Woods.
Woods was the last superstar to complete this incredible feat, and that was in 2002. This big gap highlights how difficult Rory McIlroy's impending task will be.
His ability to take Augusta by storm one more time continues to be a matter of interest for golf aficionados globally.
