Rory McIlroy’s bid for a second PLAYERS Championship is in jeopardy. The back injury MacIlroy suffered at Bay Hill left him in a precarious situation before the opening round at TPC Sawgrass.
The Northern Irishman said he experienced an injury while performing a gym exercise during a "hinge pattern," and he explained that he "overextended a little bit" while describing injury-related discomfort that began last Saturday.
Regarding his status for the PGA Tour's flagship event, McIlroy said that his position is still a "game-time decision," and he continues to evaluate his injury recovery on an "hour-by-hour" timetable.
The injury was so bad that McIlroy "could not stand to address the ball on Saturday morning on the range at Bay Hill," causing him to find a physiotherapist for daily therapy.

Although it was a scary sight, 2019 champion McIlroy pointed out that the problems are "purely muscular" rather than structural, explaining that he is currently experiencing "sensitivity" and "fatigue" in the glutes and hip flexors.
"The drugs are working wonders," McIlroy said, and he even stated that he was able to hit clubs that went as far as a 6-iron on Wednesday, but he has not attempted to see if his back can take a hit with a driver.
Rory McIlroy has faced this in the past
McIlroy has experience competing in pain, as he dealt with an almost identical situation at the 2023 TOUR Championship, when he stated he started the week in "so much discomfort."
In that case, he was "chipping it around" the entire first round just to get through it, but by Sunday, he "felt like a whole new person," and could compete at a high level.
He has high hopes for this week, stating that "all indications are pointing in the right direction" as he prepares to attempt to walk nine holes with just a wedge and a putter.
McIlroy stated, "I would like to think that the sensitivity will go down as time goes on," while stressing that he does not feel he is "at risk of doing any damage" from playing.
With the tournament starting on March 12th, fans are waiting to see if the former champion will make his tee time or be forced to withdraw.
