The CJ Cup Byron Nelson will see its conclusion with a thrilling Sunday showdown at TPC Craig Ranch as defending champion Scottie Scheffler still has an excellent chance of catching up with the leader after a dramatic Saturday at McKinney.
The tournament leader, Si Woo Kim, almost made history during Friday's second round by firing an 11-under par 60. He narrowly missed a magic 59, which would have been the 16th sub-60 round in PGA Tour history, after a late bogey, putting him right in Scheffler's crosshairs.
During his Saturday post-round interview, Scheffler discussed his mindset, saying, "I'm looking forward to the challenge of going to chase him down tomorrow."
After strong scoring in the opening rounds, Kim stayed calm through the third round and currently leads by himself at 21-under par after posting a solid 68 on Saturday afternoon.
The tight leaderboard energized the crowd at the golf course all week long. Scheffler praised the local fans for creating an unforgettable atmosphere around the native Dallas practice partners.
Having enjoyed such great gallery support, the world’s top-ranked golfer is ready to get started on his chase. "I think two shots back going into tomorrow, so I'm looking forward to the challenge," Scheffler added.
This unwavering competitive spirit is a hallmark of the defending champion, and he will be relying on all his past experiences to help him through this big test.
Scottie Scheffler's Championship Pedigree
Scottie Scheffler trails the leader by two shots with an overall score of 19-under par. The golfer is tied with Wyndham Clark in second position after the two recorded a 6-under 65 during the Moving Day.
Stephan Jaeger, Tom Hoge, and Sungjae Im, with an aggregate of 17-under par, continue to make the tournament hard to predict.
After notable renovations featuring completely new greens and French bunkers, Scottie Scheffler feels that this time the TPC Craig Ranch demands complete focus.
Reflecting on how his past victory influences his current strategy, the defending champion highlighted that defending a title requires adjusting to real-time changes rather than relying on old memories.
"I think you can always take positive momentum from things, but coming — from last year to this year, it's a different golf course," Scheffler explained.
Pointing directly to the architectural changes that disrupted the field's comfort level, he detailed exactly why players must approach the track with a completely fresh perspective.
"The greens have been redone," Scheffler pointed out regarding the new challenges. "There's some new bunkering out there. It's different than it was last year."
The stage is officially set for a classic Texas duel. With both players chasing a high-stakes victory close to home, Sunday's final round will determine who triumphs.
