World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler's latest achievement comes with a bittersweet statistical twist. The current top-ranked golfer has achieved parity with a 12-year-old benchmark of consistency among elite players.

With the Cadillac Championship coming to an end, the standings followed a familiar trend for Scheffler, placing him near the top. Although he failed to claim the trophy, he managed to achieve another record that will go down in history.

Golf reporter, Justin Ray, posted on X stating that Scheffler is the "1st player to finish runner-up in 3 consecutive PGA Tour starts since 2014 (Sergio Garcia)".

He reached the milestone during the final round at the Blue Monster at Doral. He finished the game in second place with a cumulative score of 13-under par (275) after scoring 71, 67, 69, and 68.

Scheffler's runner-up streak mirrors that of Sergio Garcia, who established his own mark of consistency during the 2014 season. The Spaniard secured three consecutive silver finishes starting at the Travelers Championship, where he fell just short of Kevin Streelman.

Following up on his form, Garcia went on to finish second again at the Open Championship at Royal Liverpool, losing to Rory McIlroy. He ended the streak by being a runner-up again at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational tournament.

Scheffler's T2 at the Cadillac Championship marks the third of his runner-up streak as the world number one golfer, which began at the 2026 Masters Tournament. Scheffler shot 11-under par (277), finishing only one stroke away from claiming the crown against Rory McIlroy.

He continued the trend at the RBC Heritage with an impressive scorecard of 67 in the final round, but lost out on a playoff to Matt Fitzpatrick after tying him at 18-under.

From Historic Near-Misses to the PGA Championship Defense

As the Tour progresses, the defending champion gets ready for the PGA Championship after his win in 2025. For him, it would be a perfect chance to end his streak of second-place finishes.

Though the consistent Texan appears at the top of leaderboards time and again, his record reflects just one win this year, and that was in January during the American Express.

Since then, it has been difficult for him to bring home the winner's trophy despite his historic consistency. He will no doubt be looking to end his runner-up streak by defending his PGA Championship title between May 14 and May 17, 2026, at Aronimink.

Will Scottie Scheffler be able to end his train of near misses with a win at the PGA Championship? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
