Scottie Scheffler Says Ryder Cup Organizers Never Asked for His Opinion: “They Got My Phone Number”

via Usta

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler is currently regarded as the most dominant player in professional golf.

However, he remains surprisingly distant from the rooms where the game’s important decisions are made.

Scottie Scheffler addressed the media at a press conference at the 2026 Cadillac Championship on April 29. He mentioned that he had not been consulted for deciding on Jim Furyk becoming the next U.S. Ryder Cup captain.

"To answer your input question, no, I have no input at all. I found out when you did," Scheffler said when asked about playing a part in the decision-making process. "If they want my opinion, they got my phone number, I’m sure."

The star golfer noted that the PGA of America operates independently of the players on the PGA TOUR. He clarified that while he was happy to help, the governing body has not yet reached out.

Despite maintaining strong ties with players like Jordan Spieth, who is a part of the PGA Tour Player Advisory Council, he does not get involved with all the administrative issues. He fills out the necessary forms and shows up to compete.

This happens during a period when the professional golf calendar is quite loaded with Signature Events and Majors, resulting in considerable physical and mental exhaustion for the best players in the game.

Scottie Schefler Shows Confidence in Furyk’s Leadership

Despite not being informed of the decision, Scottie Scheffler was quite sure of Jim Furyk's ability to lead the American team to greatness.

While talking about Jim and his wife, Tabitha Furyk, he said,

"Jim and Tabitha both are really, they're great people. Jim is a really, really good leader. He's extremely organized in the way he does things."

The World No.1 further elaborated on why he thought that Jim Furyk would do well at this position, stressing the importance of his familiarity with the concept of playing in a team.

"I think with Jim you just have so much experience across so many team events whether it's playing or being a captain," Scheffler mentioned. "The guy's been on those teams for seems like for forever."

Scheffler pointed out that Furyk's tenure as an assistant captain and his successful stint as captain of the Presidents Cup team give him a distinct edge. He respects Furyk's methodical approach.

Moreover, the absence of any phone call from the organizers is secondary to picking the best candidate, according to Scheffler.

The Ryder Cup will take place in September of next year.
