Scottie Scheffler is all set to officially debut in the 2026 season. But that is getting him a step closer to breaking one of Tiger Woods’ records.
Scheffler will step into the American Express as the Official World Golf Ranking leader for 141 consecutive weeks. That’s exactly half of Woods’ 281 consecutive weeks as the OWGR number one (June 12, 2005, to October 30, 2010).
To break the former number one’s record, Scheffler will have to stay on top of the leaderboard till October 16, 2028.
On top of that, Woods captured the number one spot in the OWGR for a total of 683 weeks. And Scottie Scheffler is a long way behind with only 175 weeks. But with 19 PGA Tour wins, including four major wins, Scheffler has a high probability of catching up to Woods.
Just last year, he managed two major wins. And heading into the American Express, he doesn't have to worry about Rory McIlroy or Tommy Fleetwood, the #2 and #3 ranked players, respectively, for a little bit. That's because he has a 223-point lead over second place.
Scheffler is also chasing another record. For now, Woods tops the list for highest career earnings in PGA Tour history with $120,999,166. Closely behind him stands Rory McIlroy with $107,981,766. But by the end of the season, we might see Scheffler replacing Woods and claiming his first AmEx win.
Scottie Scheffler Reveals the Real Reason He’s Entering the American Express
As he prepared for the event in La Quinta, Scheffler stated, "I had a few extra weeks off this year, and fortunately, it wasn't due to injury. Just the start of the year started a little bit later for me."
"I love playing this event to start. You get to come here, kind of see where your game's at. You get a good gauge of where you're at just based upon you're not really playing in so many conditions, and you got to be sharp around this place in order to make enough birdies to compete."
Scheffler is using the 2026 opener to both chase history and measure his current form. The American Express tournament serves as an early benchmark in his path toward milestones set by Tiger Woods.
