England captain Harry Kane revealed that he once shared a round of golf with U.S. President Donald Trump, describing the experience as one of the more unusual moments of his career.

Ahead of England's World Cup quarter-final against Norway in Miami, Kane discussed the invitation from Trump, who recently praised the Bayern Munich striker's performances on and off the soccer field after the two previously met in Palm Beach.

"I played alright, to be honest. We played about 18 months ago. He invited me to play when I was down in Palm Beach," Kane said.

The encounter took place about 18 months before Trump publicly praised Kane's World Cup performances, telling reporters on Monday that the Bayern Munich striker was talented at both golf and soccer.

Just hours after England's dramatic 3-2 round-of-16 win over co-hosts Mexico in Mexico City, Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform: "Harry Kane of England is a GREAT player!!!"

The next day, Trump added: "I think Kane is a great player. I played golf with him and I like him a lot. He's a good golfer. He's really great."

Kane had an amazing World Cup, scoring six goals in five games. The 32-year-old trailed only Argentina's Lionel Messi (8), France's Kylian Mbappé (8), and Norway's Erling Haaland (7) in the race for the Golden Boot.

Kane returned the compliments, expressing his gratitude for the opportunity. He also complimented Trump on his golf game and joked that he hoped to be that good when he reached Trump's age.

"So when the President invites you somewhere … it was a pretty surreal experience just to meet him, and to play golf with him," Kane said, according to the Athletic.

"His golf is pretty good, to be honest. I hope I can play golf as well as him when I'm his age, that's for sure. So, it was a unique experience. I'm just grateful he invited me down to play."

There are no public reports of Kane golfing with other world leaders, while Trump has previously hosted soccer stars on the course, including Wayne Rooney at Trump National Golf Club in 2025.

While Trump has often crossed paths with soccer stars through golf, his ties to the sport go back much further.

Donald Trump once played soccer, too

Long before he was posting praise for Kane on social media, Trump had his own history with the sport — as a player.

By his senior year at the New York Military Academy, Trump had given up football to join the school's varsity soccer team. Alfred Harrison, a former teammate, told Matt Viser of The Atlantic that Trump was a decent player who lined up on the back line.

Harrison recalled Trump occasionally launching long balls forward to start attacks.

“He was fairly active on the field,” Harrison said of Trump. “That guy had an abundance of testosterone, that’s for sure.”

There's little indication Trump played much soccer after that season, and it isn't clear how closely he has followed the sport in the years since.
