“Takes About a Year or Two Years to Heal”: PGA Tour Pro Opens Up After the Hip Surgery

The former FedEx Cup champion, Billy Horschel, went under the knife to repair a torn labrum in his right hip. That’s why he missed the major championships last year. But is he fit enough to compete at the Cognizant Classic?
A couple of days ago, Horschel joined Gary Williams on 5 Clubs and said, “The hip itself, since I tore labrum, is healed. Just the muscles need to build up endurance. I had two microfractures that are still healing as we speak. That takes about a year or two years to heal.”
A torn labrum usually takes around three to six months of rehabilitation. But microfractures, unlike the soft tissue repairs, take much longer. Of course, the timeline depends on the severity of injury and the rehabilitation strategy. But microfractures don’t restrict movement like an injured labrum.
Claiming the good condition of his hip, Horschel told 5 Clubs, “I’m way ahead of schedule from everyone I talk to. But in my mind, I’m never satisfied with being ahead of schedule.”

Nevertheless, the eight-time PGA Tour winner’s fast rehabilitation has already increased his endurance over the last five weeks. Right now, he’s working on building his lower body's and hips' explosive power and reaching his pre-surgery conditions.
But has Horschel’s recovery pushed him towards any wins recently?
How Has Billy Horschel Performed After Returning From Rehabiliation?
Truth be told, Horschel hasn’t been able to win anything following his return. He finished at T54 at the Baycurrent Classic. However, he managed to secure back-to-back top 15 finishes at the the Back of Utah Championship, Hero World Challenge, and the Grant Thornton Invitational.
In the 2026 season, Billy Horschel hasn’t been able to make it into the top 20. On top of that, he has missed the cut for the Farmers Insurance Open and the WM Phoenix Open. But as of now, at the first round of the Cognizant Classic, Horschel scored two-under 69 and is ranked at T20.
With his lower body strength still recovering, it’s certainly one of his more impressive performances. But is it enough to get him his first victory following his return from the surgery?
