The Day When Rory McIlroy Hurled a Fan’s Ball Into the Lake at the PGA Tour Event

Rory McIlroy has long been regarded as one of the most composed and thoughtful figures on the PGA Tour. But during the 2022 BMW Championship, a bizarre on-course disruption pushed the five-time major champion into an unscripted moment that quickly became one of the most talked-about fan incidents in recent golf history.

The incident unfolded during the second round of the competition. As McIlroy prepared to make it to the hole at the par-3 15th, his ball suddenly rolled backward on the fairway, even though the ground appeared flat. Instead, it circled the hole a few times before attempting to get into it. It was crystal clear that it was a fan’s remote-controlled golf ball.

The fan shouted, addressing Rory McIlroy, “Rory, this is how you got hole-in-one!” But instead of watching, the Irishman interfered with his club, preventing the RC ball from entering the 15th green. Visibly disappointed, the golfer picked up the ball and threw it into the lake, igniting laughter from the crowd.

However, the tournament officials were just as unimpressed with the antic as Rory McIlroy. They intervened shortly after he threw the remote-controlled ball and escorted the spectator off the course. PGA Tour rules prohibit any interference with play, and the rank was a clear violation of the rule.

McIlroy's playing partner, Scott Stallings, on the other hand, found the incident quite amusing.

Scott Stallings on what Rory McIlroy did

Talking about it after the game, he said, "That wasn't exactly something I expected to see on a Saturday afternoon. He kept yelling at Rory, 'This is my dream, this is my dream.' I don't know exactly what he was dreaming about, but his ball is gone."

But did Rory McIlroy do the right thing by throwing the ball away? If we are concerned with Stallings’ opinion, the answer is ‘yes’. “I thought it was great,” he admitted. “I was about to go and do the same thing.”

Years later, the incident stands as one of the most surreal fan-related disruptions on the PGA Tour. It was an afternoon when technology, humor, and competitive golf collided, and Rory McIlroy made sure the line was firmly drawn. But what are your thoughts on this?
