The Sentry Set To Be Removed From PGA Tour Schedule Starting in 2027 As It Releases Statement

Apr 21, 2026, 1:58 AM CUT

The PGA Tour's historical presence in the Hawaiian Islands is coming to an end. There will be no "Hawaii Swing" in early January for the first time in over five decades.

Officially, it was established that neither The Sentry nor the Sony Open will take place in Hawaii next year. A move towards a reduced schedule, with an emphasis on stability and prominent venues on the mainland, prompted this decision.

"The Sentry officially will not return in 2027," Sports Business Journal reported on April 20.

This decision comes after canceling the game in 2026 due to problems with water delivery at the Plantation Course at Kapalua. In addition to environmental issues, the Tour pointed out the challenges of organizing such an event.

"There are logistical complexities unique to staging a tournament on the island of Maui," the Tour stated in a press release.

According to the Sports Business Journal, the Tour is actively exploring future opportunities for its remaining Hawaiian event.

"The tour is in the beginning phases of possibly transitioning the Sony Open to a PGA Tour Champions event," revealed the report.

So, with all these changes, the tour expressed its appreciation for the place and fans.

“We are grateful to The Plantation Course at Kapalua, Kapalua Resort, Maui County and the State of Hawaii for their longtime support of our season-opening PGA Tour event, as well as the fans, partners and volunteers across Maui who have supported the event throughout the years,” the tour said in a statement, per SBJ.

However, Sentry's partnership with the PGA Tour will continue until 2035 when its sponsorship deal expires.

"The PGA Tour will share more details regarding its 2027 schedule at a later date," the Tour added.

In the meantime, the tournament will relocate somewhere else. "A likely landing spot is at the PGA Tour's annual tournament at Torrey Pines."

Logistics and Future Venue Shifts

The move out of the islands is due to the difficulties associated with maintaining the premier broadcast product far away from the mainland. The move enables the Tour to focus on having a late-season start at a notable location on the West Coast.

"We have said from the beginning, we love Maui and Maui is a Sentry community," Stephanie Smith, Chief Marketing & Brand Officer at Sentry, stated Monday.

However, there is a need for consistency.

Some of the issues involved the problem associated with shipping deadlines and vendors' availability. Consequently, this necessitated a change in planning, starting in 2027, to simplify logistics.

This will be the end of an era since the first tournament was held in 1965. Spectators and participants can expect a revised season opener that guarantees consistency in course quality and accessibility.
