“The System Is a Little Broken”: Patrick Reed Opens Up About the World Rankings

Patrick Reed just made a huge leap in the world rankings. After winning the Hero Dubai Desert Classic, he jumped 15 spots. But the LIV Golf star believes the system that ranks him is fundamentally 'broken'.
After winning the 2026 Hero Dubai Desert Classic, Patrick Reed earned 30.85856 Official World Golf Ranking points and pushed his rank from 44 to 29. But with all things being even between the tours, does the 4Aces star feel his rank should be something else?
During the press conference at the Majlis Course at Emirates Golf Club two days ago, Reed stated, “The World Ranking system will always take care of itself.”
“I feel like with the LIV guys not really getting World Ranking points at all, unless they come out and play out here, majors, and then things like that, it just seems like the system is a little broken. I mean, rightfully so, right, all the sufficient going on in golf.”

In the last season at LIV Golf, Patrick Reed had eight top-20 finishes, including a win at Dallas. Had he showcased such a performance elsewhere (PGA Tour or DP World Tour), his OWGR position might have been different. But Reed doesn’t let that bother him.
He dubbed the OWGR as “just a number on the World Ranking system.” What he actually focuses on is playing good golf. Everything falls into place when one tries to secure a win and develops a higher probability of winning more tournaments.
For Reed, every time he enters a tournament, he believes he has a chance to win it. And that’s the most important thing, according to the 35-year-old. Yet, he seemed to be proud of ending up in the top-30 list on the world rankings.
Patrick Reed Has High Hopes to Rise in the OWGR List
Talking about the early momentum, Reed confessed, “To be a guy that earned my World Ranking points out here in the majors, to sit there and have as little amount of events that I've played to be in the Top 30 is something that it shows that my golf game still where I want it to be.”
“Hopefully, this springboards me this year to have a really solid year. Because I felt like last year was a close year. Just, you know, took me a while to get the win. But now knocking it off in January, hopefully, can carry that on throughout the year and make some noise.”
Can Reed climb higher on the ranking? What do you think?
