The Charlie Sifford Memorial Exemption into the 2026 Genesis Invitational has found its new entry. And as the tournament host, Tiger Woods extended the exemption to Sahith Theegala. 

The 15-time major champion claimed Theegala shares Sifford's desire to compete against the best golfers and display his gameplay.

Woods announced, “I am proud to welcome Sahith to the field for The Genesis Invitational, a tournament that shares a lot of meaning for us both.”

In the late 1950s and early 1960s, Charlie Sifford challenged the PGA Tour’s color barrier. He won multiple events, including the 1967 Greater Hartford Open and the 1969 Los Angeles Open, regardless of the hostility. He also helped remove the “Caucasian-only” clause from the PGA Tour in 1961.

And since 2009, the Sifford Exemption has been awarded to a golfer from a minority background who deserves to tee it up at the Genesis Invitational.

Born to Indian immigrants, the one-time PGA Tour winner found his way to golf through his father at a young age. He’s been mirroring Sifford’s legacy ever since. He won eight amateur games and two professional ones (including the 2023 Fortinet Championship). Hence, Tiger Woods believed Theegala would be the perfect recipient for the exemption in 2026. 

And the exemption extracted a few words from the 28-year-old.

Theegala felt honored for receiving the exemption from Woods. But how important is this invitational for him?

"The Genesis Invitational has played an important role in my journey to the PGA TOUR, and I truly appreciate the opportunity to compete in Charlie’s memory.”

Theegala has repeatedly proven himself since turning professional in 2020. But he made his debut on the PGA Tour in 2017 as a Pepperdine University student at The Riviera Country Club. He entered his first Genesis Invitational that year and finished T49. And in 2022, he ended up in the T48 position. 

But in 2023, Theegala came close to winning by securing the T6th spot at the tournament. And last year, he finished the event at the T17th spot.
