U.S. Golf Viewers Get a Break as Costs Are Set to Drop

Ahead of the 2026 golf season, YouTube has dropped an early Christmas present for the golf community.

Golf fans in the United States will see meaningful relief in their monthly cable bills, as YouTube TV prepares to roll out a new sports-focused subscription option in 2026.

“Early next year, we’ll launch YouTube TV Plans, bringing more choice and flexibility to our subscribers with over 10 genre-specific packages.”

This includes FS1, NBC Sports Network, all of the ESPN networks, as well as ESPN Unlimited. It's a major upgrade from previous practices. Companies used to bundle their channels, like ESPN, with their other cable channels. Essentially, viewers who only wanted ESPN had to pay for the entire bundle, including channels they wouldn't watch.

While pricing details on the new model aren't out yet, it is expected to be significantly cheaper than the current $82 base price. According to an estimate from Andrew Marchand and Devon Henderson of The Athletic, it may range somewhere near $55-$60.

This price drop comes at a crucial time. The number of pay TV subscribers is down to 43.2 million, roughly a 21% decrease from two years ago. As a result, these changes also come on the back of YouTube's negotiations with Disney, NBC, and Fox from November 2025. And it clearly made an impact.

Christian Oestelien, VP of subscriptions for YouTube, explained how YouTube built off the negotiations. "A lot of negotiations, very public negotiations as you know, but a lot of it was because we were working with them to kind of show them the data we were seeing, get them excited about what the future of television could look like," he said earlier in the week.

The announcement ended with one statement that left the sporting community intrigued. “We have a lot in store for YouTube TV members next year and can’t wait to share more soon!”
