An inspiration for Jack Nicklaus was when he saw an idol who resembled his father.

This was long before “the Golden Bear” started winning the Masters, and a case of mistaken identity occurred at the Scioto Country Club. 

Nicklaus' family first got connected to golf royalty when it started at the 1926 U.S. Open. Jack's father, Charlie Nicklaus, was a 12-year-old boy who saw the great Bobby Jones win a tournament at the Nicklaus' home course. 

The pivotal events happened during the 1931 Ryder Cup at Scioto. Charlie was in the parking lot when someone yelled, "Hey, Mr. Jones!" and the father was pulled into the clubhouse, who was then mistaken for someone who was a legend.

A Legacy of Resemblance

Jack Nicklaus remembered the extraordinary moment that led to this confusion. "He mistook my dad for Jones," Jack said. "They looked the same and even parted their hair the same way." Of course, this only made Charlie's admiration for Jones even greater.

This resemblance contributed to Jack's own journey. He met Jones for the first time at the age of fifteen. The legend invited Charlie and Jack to his cabin, and this seemingly small gesture formed a bond that would be integral to Nicklaus' budding professional career.

This story shows why Jones would always be Jack's idol. For the Nicklaus family, Jones was not just a champion far removed from the family, but a man so similar to Charlie that the lines between family and hero blurred.

This is not the only time a resemblance has sparked a story. Just as Charlie was mistaken for Jones, Jack also faced his fair share of people who said he looked like his predecessors. Ironically, just like the Jones major record, Jack surpassed all of them and claimed the title at the 1973 PGA Championship.
