When LIV Golfers Left No Doubt While Gushing Over Tiger Woods: “Not Even a Question”

Who is the greatest golfer of all time? This question often makes people stumble upon two names – Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus. And the LIV Golf stars, Ian Poulter and Tyrrell Hatton, added to that debate three months ago on SPORTbible.

On the episode of ‘Agree To Disagree’, the host questioned if Tiger Woods was the greatest golfer of all time. Hatton put his cup on ‘Agree’, while Poulter was 85% on board. The reason? “Jack [Nicklaus] was pretty good, too,” he claimed.

I’d happily go there [strongly agree] if you said the best golfer I’ve ever seen and played with,” he continued. “It’s not even a question.”

Poulter and Woods played together at several events, like the 2012 Ryder Cup and the 2018 Masters Tournament. Needless to say, the Englishman was in awe of the way Woods hit his shots.

Meanwhile, Hatton told SPORTbible, “Probably in the way he changed golf. In terms of major records, Jack obviously has won more. But I think how Tiger changed golf and the records that he went on to set, he was unbelievable.”

Woods has won 15 majors, while Nicklaus has 18 wins. But on the PGA Tour, Woods has 82 wins, leaving Nicklaus with 73. Woods has 142 consecutive cuts on the PGA Tour, and Nicklaus has only 105.

But if we look at the major runner-ups and top-10s, Nicklaus is clearly the winner. But Hal Sutton had one more aspect that separated them.

Hal Sutton Highlighted the Difference Between Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus’ Games

Hal Sutton framed the Tiger Woods–Jack Nicklaus debate by first emphasizing how much the two legends had in common, despite competing in different eras.

“I would say Jack’s pitching the ball and chipping the ball weren’t in Tiger’s league,” Sutton asserted.

“He hit the shot when he needed to, but what Jack did so well is he played into his strengths and away from his weaknesses. Tiger did that as well, but Tiger was fearless. I’m not sure that he would lay up as much as Jack did.”

Woods and Nicklaus defined greatness in different ways, shaped by their eras and instincts. That contrast ensures the debate will never truly end. But for the LIV golfers, Woods took the win.
