Cameron Young sat in the press room at TPC Sawgrass with a trophy beside him. But something about the new champion’s reaction surprised the reporters in the room.
During the press conference, one reporter said Young looked very calm for such a big moment. They wondered why the newest champion did not seem to be the happiest person on the planet.
"Now, why am I not happy? I am (laughing). I do not know," Young said, laughing.
Young finished at 13-under-par (275), beating Matt Fitzpatrick by one shot to win The Players Championship. The event is widely considered one of the toughest tournaments on the PGA Tour calendar, with TPC Sawgrass known for its narrow fairways, water hazards, and the famous island green on the 17th hole.
For years, Young was criticized for not having a trophy despite being in contention numerous times on the PGA Tour.
"I am thinking to answer questions, and my brain is very tired after playing that golf course for four days," Young addressed the room. He said the tournament's mental fatigue was still there.
For Young, the moment marked the end of a long wait for his first PGA Tour victory.
A Long-Awaited Win for Cameron Young
The former Rookie of the Year celebrated a long-awaited victory after navigating numerous traps at Sawgrass. This week, he needed to demonstrate the ability to finish a big tournament.
"I just think it is more for me about I think that is the best way for me to play the best," Young said. The win showed the talent many experts believed he had.
The significant contributor to his success was his ability to remain calm. He showed composure and maintained his leadership, even as some players closed in on his position. He was, once again, unaffected by the pressure of the remaining holes.
This win is a significant stepping stone for his next Masters Tournament appearance. It will be interesting for fans to see if he can carry this form into the season's first major.
