Wyndham Championship Field Gutted by High-Profile Withdrawals, Including $66M Pro

Patrick Cantlay is out of the Wyndham Championship.
The eight-time PGA Tour winner withdrew from this week's field at Sedgefield Country Club, PGA Tour Communications confirmed on X.
World No. 228 Ben Silverman takes his place. No reason was given for the decision, as Tour players aren't required to disclose one before a tournament begins.
It is a surprising move because Cantlay entered the week in good form. Cantlay has banked more than $66 million in career official earnings, and he entered the week as one of the betting favorites at Sedgefield.
He was also squarely inside the FedExCup's top 50, a status that locks him into next week's FedEx St. Jude Championship and Week 2's BMW Championship regardless of anything that happens in Greensboro this week.
The timing is certainly disappointing, as Cantlay has delivered an impressive season.
With finishes of seventh at the Valspar Championship, eighth at the RBC Heritage, tenth at the Truist Championship, and twelfth at the Masters, he stands at 41st in the FedExCup standings.
Silverman, meanwhile, made just five cuts in 12 starts this season. His high point was a tie for third at the ISCO Championship in July.
He was actually the beneficiary of Brooks Koepka's withdrawal once already this summer, stepping into the Rocket Classic field last week. Now he's picking up Cantlay's spot at Sedgefield too.
He missed the cut at the Rocket Classic, though.
Other big names missing this week's Wyndham Championship field
The Wyndham Championship has suffered an epidemic of withdrawals. Since the original field was locked in on Friday, five players have decided to stay out of it, including Cantlay.
Michael Thorbjornsen is the most understandable absence. He won his first PGA Tour title Sunday at the Rocket Classic, closing with a bogey-free 63 for a two-shot victory over Xander Schauffele.
The win vaulted him from 69th in FedExCup points, securing his postseason spot outright. Rather than chase another cross-country flight on no rest, he might choose to sit this week out.
Justin Lower, ranked 285th in the world and still chasing his first Tour title at age 37, replaces him.
Kristoffer Reitan, winner of the 2025 Truist Championship, also withdrew, and countryman Kristoffer Ventura replaced him. Reitan entered the week safely inside the playoff, ranked 17th in FedExCup points.
Brendon Todd stepped out as well, with Matt Kuchar taking his place on Saturday. Dan Brown later withdrew on Sunday, and Lanto Griffin moved in.
